Palencia — Viking service in 32095

North St. Augustine off US 1, inland of the Intracoastal. Salt is not the problem here — age, installation and storm season are.

Palencia kitchens run to built-in stacks.

Palencia sits north of the city on the US 1 corridor, inland of the Intracoastal. That location decides the shape of the work. The coastal corrosion that dominates our calls in 32080 and 32084 is not a factor here: condensers fill with ordinary household dust rather than salt residue, stainless fascias stay bright, and fasteners come apart the way the manufacturer intended rather than shearing off in the hole. What replaces salt as the local variable is the age of the equipment, the way it was installed, and the electrical supply it has to survive.

What the calls here actually are

What the owner reportsWhat we usually find
Fresh food side warming, freezer still hardEvaporator fan, air damper, or a frost-blocked outlet
Cabinet uniformly warm, compressor runningSealed-system or start-circuit fault, and a repair-or-replace conversation
Oven browns on one sideConvection fan, door seal, or a swing the thermostat is not controlling
Burner clicks but will not lightElectrode gap or a blocked port, before anything electrical
Display dark, everything else workingSupply at the outlet, then the board and the harness to it
Dishwasher leaves the upper rack dirtySpray-arm holes and the coarse filter, before the circulation pump

The order a diagnosis runs in

The order matters more than the parts list, because the wrong order is what turns a single visit into three. We take the measurement that eliminates the largest number of possibilities first, and we take it with an instrument rather than by eye.

On refrigeration that means asking whether the freezer is still holding before anyone opens a panel, because the answer splits the diagnosis in half. On an oven it means logging a probe through three complete cycles instead of reading a thermometer once, because set point, average and swing are three different numbers and only one of them is usually wrong. On anything with a board, it means testing the supply and the ground at the outlet before condemning electronics that may have been a victim rather than a cause.

Sealed-system work is a separate matter: refrigerant is recovered rather than vented, and that work is carried out by EPA Section 608 certified technicians.

Storm season is the local risk here

Roughly 68 thunderstorm days a year pass over this part of Florida, and the damage does not arrive through the appliance. It arrives through the house wiring and lands on the lowest-voltage electronics in the machine. The signature is unmistakable once you have seen it a few times: every motor, element and compressor tests perfectly while the control board is dead or behaving erratically.

Extended outages do the same thing more slowly. After the multi-day power failures that followed Matthew in 2016, Irma in 2017 and Helene in 2024, we took calls for weeks — not days — as boards and inverter-driven compressors that had been stressed during the event finally quit. If your appliance died a fortnight after the power came back, that is not a coincidence and it is worth saying so when you book.

Plumbed appliances

JEA publishes tap-water hardness for 32095 at 355 ppm, and on an untreated supply that is why the ice maker and the dishwasher are usually the first two components in the house to need attention. We quote a clean and a replacement part as separate lines on the estimate so you can see which of the two we think is doing the work. We do not sell water treatment and have no stake in the decision either way.

Repair or replace

Built-in equipment changes the arithmetic. A free-standing appliance can be wheeled out and swapped in an afternoon; a column refrigerator or a wall oven is joinery, and replacing it means the surrounding cabinetry, the panel, the trim and sometimes the electrical supply as well. That is why a repair that looks expensive against a new machine is often still the cheaper answer once the kitchen is counted.

We will say plainly when it is not. A sealed-system failure on a cabinet already past twenty years, or a discontinued part with no equivalent still in the supply chain, is a replacement conversation, and we would rather have it at the estimate than after you have paid for a repair that buys a year.

Getting there, and what a visit costs

Palencia is a short run up US 1 from the city, so it sits on the same corridor as the rest of north St. Augustine and we can usually offer a tight arrival window. A flat $80 diagnostic, credited toward the repair. A written estimate before any part is ordered. Genuine OEM parts, 90 days on labour and 365 days on parts.

The column unit ran without stopping and the floor beside it was warm to stand on. He measured current at the condenser, showed me the mat of dust and dog hair packed behind it, cleaned it and rechecked the fan draw. It cycles normally now.

The blower would only run flat out on its top speed. He tested the speed control board, replaced it and cleaned the baffles while the hood was open anyway. It is quiet on low again and the kitchen clears after searing fish.

One surface burner would spark on and on without ever catching. He measured the electrode gap, cleaned a clogged port and had it lighting in minutes, then went over the other burners while he had the top apart. Nothing needed replacing.
