Davis Shores — Viking service on the island side of the Bridge of Lions

Davis Shores is the stretch of Anastasia Island directly across the Bridge of Lions from the plaza, laid out on dredged and filled ground in the 1920s. That one fact — filled, low, and surrounded on three sides by water — explains most of what we end up doing in these kitchens.

Storms, outages and what they leave behind

Roughly 68 thunderstorm days a year pass over this part of Florida, and the surge path into an appliance is the house wiring rather than the appliance itself. The signature is easy to recognise once you have seen it: every motor, element and compressor tests perfectly while the control board is dead or behaving erratically.

Extended outages do the same damage more slowly. After the multi-day power failures that followed Matthew in 2016, Irma in 2017 and Helene in 2024, the calls came in over weeks rather than days, as boards and inverter-driven compressors that had been stressed during the event finally gave out. An appliance that failed a fortnight after the power came back is not a coincidence, and it is worth telling us that when you book.

There is one limit we will not cross on this side of the bridge. An appliance that has stood in water is not a repair job. Silt and salt get into places no service procedure reaches, insulation holds moisture for months, and electronics that pass every test on the day can fail without warning later. Where we find it, we say so, write it up for the insurer, and stop — rather than sell you a board that is being fitted into a machine we cannot stand behind.

Salt air is the constant

What is not in question on this side of the bridge is the air. Davis Shores sits between the Matanzas and Salt Run, and the aerosol load is high on any onshore wind. Salt is hygroscopic: it settles as an invisible film and then holds moisture against metal for hours after everything looks dry. The consequences are specific and repeatable.

We come to island calls prepared for seized hardware. That is not a detail — it is the difference between a single visit and a return trip, and it is why we ask for the model and serial before we load the truck.

Kitchens that predate the appliance

The original Davis Shores houses were built in the late 1920s and 1930s, and their kitchens were sized for a stove and an icebox. Nearly every professional range in this neighbourhood is sitting in an opening that has been modified, and the modifications tend to share the same faults: not enough clearance behind the appliance, a cabinet run that is a fraction out of level, and combustible surrounds closer than the installation instructions allow. Later additions and raised, post-flood rebuilds have their own version of the problem, where the kitchen was fitted into a footprint decided by the structure rather than by the equipment.

None of that is cosmetic. A range with restricted rear clearance runs its own controls hotter than they were designed for, and it will keep failing until the opening is corrected. When we find it, we measure and photograph it and put the numbers on the estimate, because replacing the part without changing the installation puts you back here in a year.

Getting to you

Davis Shores is the closest neighbourhood on the island to the city centre, and the only thing that moves our arrival window is a bridge opening. We schedule around them rather than promising through them.
